Traverse City Filmmakers to Screen "Xingu" on Friday, January 20 at the Center.
Traverse City filmmakers
Angeline and Michael Piotrowski will bring their short feature film
"Xingu" to the Ludington Area Center for the Arts Friday, January 20 at 7
p.m. for a screening and discussion co-hosted by Ludington Visiting
Writers and the Third Coast Film Society.
Based on a short story
by Edith Wharton, "Xingu" was an Official Selection of the 2011 Green
Bay Film Festival, the 2011 Detroit/Windsor Film Festival and the 2011
Traverse City Short Film Festival. The story deals with a "culture club"
of pseudo-intellectuals who have the honor of hosting a celebrated
author for a book discussion. They get a surprise lesson in the art of
being smart.
"Although this 17-minute
film will be enjoyable viewing for anyone who likes good movies, the
Piotrowskis' visit should be of special interest to writers curious
about writing screenplays, and people interested in the film-making
process," said George Dila, of Ludington Visiting Writers. "The new
video technology makes filmmaking a tempting artistic endeavor for many
creative people these days."
Angeline adapted the
Wharton story to a film script, giving it a contemporary Traverse City
setting. She and Michael shared producing and directing
responsibilities.
Preceding and following
the screening, the Piotrowski's will talk about their experience in
making the film, from adapting the screenplay to the actual shooting and
editing of the film, and working with cast and crew. They will also
answer audience questions about independent film production.
This event is free and open to the public.

It's January, but think spring! Make a Splash for the Arts on April 7!
Crowds
of hardy folk will make a splash for the arts at the 13th annual
Ludington Lake Jump, in what's become a rite of spring in Western
Michigan.
The
event will be held on Saturday, April 7 at Stearns Park Beach in
Ludington at 11 a.m. This year's beneficiary is the Ludington Area
Center for the Arts.
"We are
honored that the Ludington Lake Jump Committee has selected the Center
for the Arts to benefit from this year's event, "said Tim McKay, the
Center's board president."I am also pleased that Megan Payment has
agreed to chair this year's event. Her enthusiasm for the arts,
tremendous creative energy, and experience in event planning and
fundraising will be terrific assets to the effort."
The
Center's goal is to raise $30,000 at this year's Lake Jump. The funds
will be used toward programming and renovations at the area's first and
only Center for the Arts. Everyone has an opportunity to contribute to
reaching the goal of this year's Lake Jump: 1) see how many pledges you
can get for taking the plunge; 2) support someone who will be making a
splash for the arts; or 3) take it a step further and organize an
employee team at your workplace and see if your employer will match the
team's pledges.
More information about this year's Lake Jump, including pledge forms, is available at www.lakejump.org or on Facebook (Ludington Lake Jump).
The
Ludington Lake Jump was started on a dare by two local disc jockeys.Over
the past 11 years, the annual fundraiser has generated nearly $300,000
to area charities including Rotary's STRIVE program, Sandcastles
Children's' Museum, and the Ludington Library's Children's Wing.

A.M. Galleries and the Center Team Up for "Progressive" Exhibition of Bert Petri's Work
 |
| Barb, by Bert Petri |
Paintings from Bert
Petri's sixty-year career are on display at both A.M. Galleries and the
Center's gallery throughout December, making it a "progressive" feast of
Petri's work.
"As an artist and
gallery owner, I am always looking for creative ways to collaborate with
the Center for the Arts," explained Andy Thomas, owner of A&M
Galleries. "Having Bert's work on display in both the Center's gallery
and my new space offers art lovers to two venues to see the breadth of
his life's work."
Petri, who died in 2009,
was noted for his nautical paintings, but he was versatile in both
medium and subject, painting epic landscapes in oil, large-scale
portraits, and intimate portraits in pastel. The paintings on exhibit
at A&M galleries and the Center for the Arts represent only a
portion of the work that Petri produced in his life. Petri shared his
artistic knowledge through his book, "The Complete Guide to Painting
Water," which is available for sale in the Center's gift shop as well as
A&M Galleries.
